Hobbish refers to the situation where you do your job as a hobby, enjoying it thoroughly. Every job done with pleasure is a hobby. Before writing this article, I heard this phrase in a bank advertisement: “Banking is not our hobby, it’s our job.” Then I thought about it a lot and felt that something was wrong with this statement. Work can be more serious than a hobby, but it’s certainly not done with as much love as a hobby. The new version of this statement would be: “SMEs are not our hobby, they’re our job!” So, what’s Hobbish?
What is work?
According to TDK (Turkish Language Association), work is an activity or labor done to achieve a result, to produce something by exerting effort. Other definitions in the dictionary describe it as labor that creates value. Studying, reading a book, are also considered work. The things you do in the morning when you leave home to earn money are already work. Even loving is a work. For instance, one must do the work of loving well.
What is a hobby?
Today, TDK defines hobby simply as an occupation. Google defines the word hobby as: an activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure. As we understand, a hobby is also work and is done regularly. Let’s find people who make money from their hobbies. Just type hobby on YouTube. Some have already turned hobbies into a job.
Many people see hobbies as trivial, but they are mistaken. A hobby is a job done with love. Work done without time constraints is an enjoyable job. A hobby entertains you. When you have a hobby and are engaged in it, no one pressures you to finish quickly. This is the logic of a hobby: do it with joy, not by force. Work is not enjoyable. There is responsibility and obligation in work.
What is Hobbish?
We all know what work and hobby are. Doing a job with love is beautiful. Making money from a job you love is amazing. Now it’s time to describe these two with a single word: Hobbish. Yes, both hobby and work together. When you love what you do, you naturally earn money and, on top of that, you are happy. Since inventing it, I have been using the word Hobbish. Apparently, there are others using it too, which makes me happy. Language is a living phenomenon. Every person contributes a word to the language. After all, weren’t the creators of the language people like you and me? Language arises out of need and develops with it. Language continues to evolve as long as there are speakers.
What happens if you have a Hobbish?
When creating Hobiş in Türkçe (Turkish), my aim was not to invent a new word. I admit, something very fun and pleasant came out of it. The formation of Hobbish reflects my lifestyle. I started loving my job later; now I only do jobs I love. My jobs are my hobbies.
Conclusion
Speakers create the language, as we know. Influenced by a bank advertisement, I thought about people doing their jobs without love. Yes, they do their jobs well and yes, they are successful, but are they happy while doing their jobs? The seriousness of the job deprives them of fun! People who take their jobs too seriously just have to do it properly. Can they spare time to add new excitement to their work? Every hobby exists to make you happy. A hobby is not even considered work.
Hobby + Work = Hobbish or Hobbyish
So why shouldn’t people who work do their jobs with love? Isn’t it better to do your job with love and enjoy it? For this, you first need to discover yourself and find your hobbies. Then turn your hobby into a job. Saying “Banking is our hobby!” would show how much they love their jobs. Saying “I do my job like my hobby; I don’t take my job seriously” does not mean that. On the contrary, it means I love my job and I do it best with pleasure. Instead of trying to motivate people who do their jobs without love in the workplace, try to find people who love their jobs like a hobby. That way, you don’t even need to motivate anyone.
Do your job with passion!
There is no doubt that doing your job with love is connected to morale. Some believe that high morale can even cure cancer.
Stay well.
